"RENAISSANCE CRYPTOGRAPHY AND JOHANNES TRITHEMIUS" During the 16th century cryptography became fashionable, the subject of many books by such authors as Trithemius, Cardano, della Porta, de Vigenere, and in the following century, Wilkins, Kircher, and Schott. These authors (who were not themselves cryptographic practitioners) introduced a wealth of new cryptographic techniques which did not become fully assimilated into practice until the 18th and 19th centuries. What were their motives? For the post 1550 authors, a shared interest in "magia naturalis" can explain the use of cryptography as an illustrative example, but this explanation has not been taken as covering Trithemius's motives for writing cryptography books in 1500 and 1508. Instead, following D. P. Walker and F. Yates, it has been popular in our century to connect Trithemius's cryptography with demonic magic. Recent work has, however, exposed the evidence for this connection as largely illusory. Further details on the BSHM web site and from J. V.
