US Department Of Homeland Security
The National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002 served to mobilize and organize our nation to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks. This exceedingly complex mission requires a focused effort from our entire society if we are to be successful. To this end, one primary reason for the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security was to provide the unifying core for the vast national network of organizations and institutions involved in efforts to secure our nation. In order to better do this and to provide guidance to the 180,000 DHS men and women who work every day on this important task, the Department developed its own high-level strategic plan. The vision and mission statements, strategic goals and objectives provide the framework guiding the actions that make up the daily operations of the department.

US Federal Bureau Of Investigation
"On September 4, 2001, Robert S. Mueller, III became the 6th Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, one week into his term, he became responsible for spearheading what is perhaps the most extensive reorganization the FBI has experienced since its conception. By May 2002, he articulated ten top FBI priorities: protecting the U.S. from terrorist attacks, from foreign intelligence operations, and from cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes; combating public corruption at all levels; protecting civil rights; combating international and national organized crime, major white-collar crime, and significant violent crime; supporting our law enforcement and intelligence partners; and upgrading FBI technology. ""While we remain committed to our other important national security and law enforcement responsibilities, the prevention of terrorism takes precedence in our thinking and planning; in our hiring and staffing; in our training and technologies; and, most importantly, in our investigations,"" Director Mueller has said."

Oakrich National Laboratories
As we celebrate ORNL's historical achievements, our challenge is to build on Alvin Weinberg's notion of a laboratory whose mission evolves and strengthens over time. To that end, we continue to build on ORNL's historic competencies in energy, life sciences, neutron sciences and advanced materials while adding new research missions in the areas of national security and high-performance computing. Equally important, we are literally rebuilding ORNL by undertaking a $300-million modernization program that will maintain our laboratory as one of the world's leading scientific research centers.

United States Patent and Trademark Office
For over 200 years, the basic role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has remained the same: to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). Under this system of protection, American industry has flourished. New products have been invented, new uses for old ones discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The strength and vitality of the U.S. economy depends directly on effective mechanisms that protect new ideas and investments in innovation and creativity. The continued demand for patents and trademarks underscores the ingenuity of American inventors and entrepreneurs. The USPTO is at the cutting edge of the Nations technological progress and achievement.
